Chainmail Armor Buying Guide

When buying chainmail armor, focus on ring construction, material, ring size, garment type, weight, fit, and intended use. Historical mail and modern protective mail can look similar while being built for very different purposes.

Riveted vs. butted mail

Riveted mail generally offers greater structural integrity than simple butted rings and is closer to many historical European examples. Ring shape, rivet style, and alternating solid rings can also matter.

Choose the right garment

Hauberks, haubergeons, coifs, collars, skirts, and chausses cover different parts of the body. Consider how each piece will layer with padding, plate armor, clothing, or other equipment.

Fit matters

Mail needs enough room for movement and underlying garments without excessive bulk. Measure over the clothing or padding you expect to wear when possible.
